New Releases - February 2023

February of 2023 is a month full of new releases and debuts. (And a surprisingly amount of queer fiction and gothic vibes.)

Here are my 10 most-awaited books coming out this month!

It goes like this:

  • The list is organized by release date.

  • Every book has a small, one-to-two sentence summary under it, that shows why I am excited to read it.

  • The full, official synopsis of all books can be found at the bottom of the article, in case your interest is peaked.

FEBRUARY 7

"This Time It's Real", by Ann Liang

A fake-relationship rom-com with Beijing as the background. A made-up essay that goes viral, a famous actor that accepts pretending to date her - for his own ulterior motives -, and a decision between finally finding love or follow her original goals.

"VenCo.", by Cherie Dimaline

An Indigenous witch tasked with finding the silver spoon that will restore women's rightful power. There's magic, there's generational exploration, there's feminism, and a powerful adversary trying to hunt all the remaining witches. There's also an organized, company-like coven system...?

"Wildblood", by Lauren Blackwood

An overlooked, powerful magician that works as a tour-guide in a Jamaican jungle. Monsters - many untold horrors -, a mission to prover her worth, a vindictive ex, a corrupt and manipulative company, and falling in love with people you maybe... shouldn't.

"The Long Run", by James Acker

Two track and field athletes meet at a party. Fate, falling in love, and finding safety - and family - in unlikely people.

FEBRUARY 14

"Heart Haunt Havoc", by Freydís Moon

Trans exorcist vs. Haunted house - and the unexpected romance that comes with it. (One of my most-awaited reads of the year!) Written by Freydís Moon, so we can only expect: Horror, heresy, horniness. With trans and non-binary rep, themes of diaspora and Catholicism, monsters and demons and hot haunted house owners full of secrets. It's sure to be deep, messy, hot, and absolutely macabre.

"Always the Almost", by Edward Underhill

A trans boy tries to win a piano competition and his ex's heart back, ends up winning something way more important. Filled with identity exploration (my absolute favorite), music, maybe a dash of transphobia, queer joy - and sorrow -, fake-relationship turned to real-feelings, and starting the journey towards self-love.

"The Last Tale of the Flower Bride", by Roshani Chokshi

A marriage threatened by the past, and a decision that needs to be made: let it go, or risk everything. A marriage - happy in appearance -, a return to the wife's childhood house, shadows lurking, full of secrets, missing friends, and a bridegroom that's too curious - for both of their sakes.

FEBRUARY 21

"Where Darkness Blooms", by Andrea Hannah

When theree mothers disappear during a storm, their daughters are forced to confront the secrets the town - and each other - hold. Horror, missing women, creepy sentient sunflowers, blood-craving, friendships as your only solace, and a town ready to ignore lives having just been shattered.

FEBRUARY 28

"She is a Haunting", by Trang Thanh Tran

Visiting her father in Vietnam, a girl is faced with a haunted house, and blooming feelings. Full of pretending - to be straight, to feeling connected with our culture -, creepy crawlers, ominous bride ghosts, strained family relations, keeping queerness under closed doors, and coming to terms with who we really are - and how other will take that.

"Nightbirds", by Kate J. Armstrong

In a world that forbids women from using magic, three girls are about to change it all. An oppressive society - keeping girls in "their place" through strict gender-roles -, well-kept secrets, religious sects, thinly-veiled magical prostitution, teenagers coming to terms with how powerful they actually are, and having to choose between their apparently comfortable life or the complete restructuring of their world.

And that's it!
